Welcome to Scoil Bhreac Chluain!

Welcome back to everyone after the Christmas break, hope you all had a great holiday. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year from everyone in Scoil Bhreac Chluain.

Healthy Eating Week: January being the season of New Year's resolutions; has all at Scoil Bhreac Chluain embarking on a few weeks of healthy eating. Various healthy eating activities are being organised for the children. Junior and Senior infants had a surprise visit from Mr. Fruit Man and tasted delicious fruit kebabs. They also enjoyed fruit and veg smoothies. Ist and 2nd sampled fabulous smoothes with Liz. What a lovely way to enjoy our fruit and veg and clock up some of our five a day. 3rd, 4th 5th & 6th all helped prepare and cook a stunning colourful vegetable sitrfry. Indeed it boasted 11 different vegetables in one dish. Many visual art, drama, & P.E. activities will also be taking place over the coming weeks. Is fearr ar nós a mhúintear go hóg. We hope that our healthy eating endeavours this month will become a permanent habit.

Mighty Mikey Milk: Another highlight of our healthy eating week was Mighty Mikey Milk's visit on Wednesday 25th of January. He delighted all classes with his dancing and 'high five'! Indeed he left presents for each child in our school, a carton of fresh milk and a Mighty Mikey Milk calendar. His visit emphasised the importance of drinking milk and eating dairy produce to ensure healthy bones and teeth. Mighty Mikey Milk abú!

Office Hours: Tricia Kennedy our school secretary works on the following days, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9.15am to 3.00pm.

Sale of Work: On behalf of the Board of Management, staff and pupils of Scoil Bhreac Chluain I'd like to thank the Parents' Association and everyone who helped to make the Sale of Work such a success on Saturday November 26th. A lot of hard work and time went into the night. Also a big thank you to everyone who attended on the night, donated money, home baking, vouchers and items to sell. The night was a tremendous success and raised over €5,400.

Christmas Carol Service: Scoil Bhreac Chluain held a Christmas Carol Service on Friday December 16th at 1.30pm in Annascaul church. The church was full to capacity with many parents, grandparents and friends attending. It was a fitting start to the festive season and the children did us all proud.

Tin Whistle: Brendan O'Sullivan is continuing with tin whistle with 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes. This is of great benefit to the children and they should be encouraged to practise at home.

W.O.W - Walk on Wednesday: W.O.W will continue every Wednesday and for the rest of the term, weather permitting. Well done and congratulations to all the pupils, parents and teachers who turn up at the bridge every Wednesday morning hail, rain or shine.

Green Schools: All the pupils and teachers are very busy working towards our 4th Green Flag. The theme this year is Transport and reducing our carbon imprint. The school has had two visits from Education Officer Fiona Barry. Also the Green School Committee is very busy at the moment doing surveys and collecting data, all of which will help towards achieving our fourth Green Flag.

Paráid na Soilse: Well done to everyone who took part in Paráid na Soilse (Parade of Lights) which took place on Sunday 5th December in Dingle. All the children made their own lanterns out of recyclable materials at home. Lights were provided by the parade organisers Comharchumann Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne to place in the lanterns. A great evening was had by all.

Christmas Cards: This year we are participating in the Christmas Cards For Schools project which will raise much needed funds for the school. Each child has designed a unique christmas card. The cards will come in packs of 10 and will be packaged in a cellophane wrap and come with 10 matching envleopes. Each pack will cost €7. We are asking you for your support in this venture. All you need to do is buy your childs christmas cards to help us in our fundraising activities. We would also be grateful if you could promote this activity to all your family, friends and businesses.

Swimming: 3rd class have commenced their swimming classes which will continue for the next five weeks.

Guide Dogs for the Blind: On Thursday 27th November Quinn, a one year old Labrador Retriever, paid a visit to the pupils in school. He was accompanied by his trainers Carol and Liam Long. A cheque for €80, raised on our Fancy Dress day on the day of the Halloween holidays, was presented to Carol and Liam for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.
